The Klimapolis Laboratory, together with representatives from the Superintendência de Administração do Meio Ambiente (SUDEMA) of the Paraíba State, and researchers from the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), attended a meeting on 11 March 2020 to discuss methods and strategies for controlling atmospheric air quality in João Pessoa.
The meeting sought to discuss possibilities of international and national cooperation in matters of air quality management, as well as a possible structure for an air quality monitoring system in the State of Paraiba.
Judith Hoelzemann, Klimapolis Laboratory partner from UFRN, said: “This meeting at SUDEMA, similar to others we had with groups in Rio Grande do Norte, demonstrated the great interest of managers and academics in solving issues related to the effects of climate change and environmental degradation that occur in the Northeast region of Brazil. There is a perception of the importance of forming research networks and interdisciplinary actions that provide sustainable solutions, based on scientific evidence, for large urban centers.”
"Establishing a technical partnership with an institute like Max Planck and with the academic community is of great importance for us to make an accurate diagnosis of the air condition and, then, we can point out solutions capable of correcting these possible polluting sources", highlighted the superintendent Sudema, Marcelo Cavalcanti.
The meeting also included the participation of Márcia Helena Pontieri, Letícia Palazzi Perez and Nataly Albuquerque, from UFPB, Victor Ventura, Samara Galvão e João Carlos de Miranda from SUDEMA, and Nico Caltabiano, Klimapolis Laboratory Manager.
